What is included with my editing services?

My goal as your tech editor is to allow you to maintain your designer's voice while also making sure your pattern is accessible and user-friendly to as much of the crochet community as possible. This means checking the spelling and grammar, internal consistency of terminology and formatting, clarity and completeness of instructions, and adherance to industry standards, as well as double checking stitch and row counts and any other calculations such as garment dimensions.

All categories of crochet and Tunisian crochet patterns are welcome! Beyond simply editing the text, I am happy to offer feedback about pattern formatting as desired.

As an additonal service, those wishing to further discuss edits can schedule a face-to-face zoom call once the first edit is complete. I will always try to schedule zoom calls for the same or next business day, as your schedule and mine allow.

At the moment, I do not offer grading or yardage estimates as a service, though I hope to one day add these to my offerings. I will, however, verify that the existing grading produces items of the intended size.

What does my editing process look like?

For new clients who are interested in my tech editing services, please contact me via the contact form below. This does not commit you to using my services but helps to add you to my contact list so that your messages do not get lost. If you have a specific pattern ready for editing, including any information regarding the item type (accessory, home decor, garment, etc.) and number of sizes included can help me to better estimate the time needed for editing. I will respond to your email within 1-2 business days.

Once you decide to move forward with tech editing, you can send your pattern draft via Google docs or PDF. My turnaround time for a first edit is typically 3-5 business days, with additional rounds of editing (if desired) completed in 1-2 business days. I am also happy to perform a final check of the pattern immediately prior to publishing.

Pricing

Currently I am charging a flat rate for pattern edits based on the complexity of the pattern, rather than charging an hourly rate. This is intended to benefit both you as the designer and myself. I recognize that for many designers it may be difficult to commit to the cost of tech editing without knowing how much you may end up spending, and while I do want to value my own time fairly, I also would not want to find myself rushing through an edit in order not to overcharge my client. I take pride in my work and never want to skip taking a second (or third) pass over a pattern in order to make sure nothing has been overlooked, but I do not want to pass that cost on to you. Charging a flat rate therefore allows me the freedom to do a thorough edit without watching the clock to make sure I'm not exceeding your budget!

The exact cost for a full tech edit will be determined upon review of the pattern, however, the ranges for each category are given below. Simpler patterns will fall on the lower end of the range while those with more complicated or lengthy instruction sets, charts, grading, construction, etc. will fall into the higher range for that category. This rate includes a final check immediately prior to publishing.

  • Amigurumi: $30-$60
  • Simple accessories or home decor items (one size): $20-$40
  • Complex accessories or home decor items (multiple sizes): $30-$60
  • Fully graded garments: $60-$90

Zoom calls to discuss edits are billed at $15/half hour.

Small Designer Grants

Making tech editing accessible to designers of all levels of experience and sales is a particular interest of mine. I think all designers and all patterns can benefit immensely from tech editing, though for many part-time designers or those just starting out, tech editing may be cost-prohibitive. To that end, I'm in the process of establishing a Small Designer Grant program. I don't have all of the details worked out, but if you would be interested in either donating to or being a recipient of such a grant, please contact me via the contact form below!
